Hi all,

Im a relativly new Student member to BAFRA and though I would take the plunge and post something on the fourm. Setting up workshop fourm was empty so what better place to start.

Im currently trying to set up my garage into a workspace where I can hone my skills and practice what I am learning at college. Currently I have all the basic tools, a work bench, wood lathe & bandsaw. The time has now come to try address the H&S issue of dust in the garage, which I have been gnoring for the past few months but it is slowly building up.

I wanted to ask other members for advice on dust extraction, what you use and any recomdentations for dust extraction machines. Guess im looking for a portable machine I can move around when needed and something that is relativly quite as im in close proximity to the neighbours.

Many thanks.

Vincent..

Re your search for advice on dust extraction, there will be various views expressed about this subject. For myself over long experience I think your priority for a portable extractor is probably the wisest choice in that it can be linked to individual machines, and keep your workshop 'hoovered', safe and worker and customer friendly. However, for the most part such machines are not "air filtration systems" and if used for the purpose of keeping the air clean are both noisy and expensive on electricty. The normal environmental dust extractor is a fixture and aids clean air circulation within the workshop. I have never had such a device because by and large the restorer's workshop does not generate large quantities of fine particle dust and on the occasions when this is a hazard you can run the portable extractor with its hose linked or clipped to the work area. But beware H&S inspectors' views vary and if they don't approve of your current system you have to conform, especially if you have any employees.

The following are some suppliers of ranges of extraction equipment both fixed and portable:

Axminster Power Tools 0800 371822
BriMarc 0300 100 1008
Rutlands 01629 815 518.

As a BAFRA Member of any category you get a 10% discount with Ax Power Tools.
