It seems to me that getting a job in furniture restoration is very difficult, perhaps too difficult.

I have been hearing tales recently about people's bad experiences. One person was sending our 20 or 30 cold call letters every week. He got some responses but most people didn't even have the courtesy to reply.

Are we really so flush with skilled and experienced people that we don't need any more? Perhaps, but then I hear moans about how difficult it is to find workers of the right caliber and experinece.

The Student Section employment service is not exactly over burdened with jobs or candidates. It seems to take months to find job-candidate matches.

What's going on here?

It would be nice to hear from people who have found jobs. How did they do it? Do they have any tips for those who haven't yet made it?

I agree with you Roland.

It's the same with Cabinetmaking.

I don't think that it's the case that were so flush with skilled and experienced people, more that most restorers (or cabinetmakers) are one man bands and it's quite a leap to go from that to employing people.
I'd like to expand and take on staff, but there are many hurdles; bigger premises, more equipment, making sure there's enough work to keep someone else busy, thinking of somebody else.
At the end of the day i don't want to end up a manager, i enjoy making and repairing things i don't want to end up just doing paperwork and running around chasing up clients to feed someone else.

Perhaps co-operatives are the way to go forward. Is there anyone out there in (or been in) this situation? How do you get on?

Any thoughts?

Stephen Davies.
