10.00 Registration: tea and coffee

10.25 Introduction to the day’s programme

10.30 Traditional and modern upholstery: similarities and differences, introduction to tools, introduction to traditional materials. Demonstration of traditional webbing techniques.

11.00 Workshop: traditional drop-in seats

12.00 Chair frames: dismantling – special tools for removing nails and screws. Releasing glued. joints. Reversible clamps and a simple ram.

1.00 Lunch: please bring your own

1.30 Chair frames: assembly techniques. Glues, clamps, peg making, draw-pegging.

2.15 Workshop: project work

3.15 Discussion: ethics of chair conservation/restoration

3.45 Upholstery materials: fire regulations, environmental considerations

4.15 Round up and feedback

If you would like advice on suitable projects to bring to this workshop, please contact either Amanda Girling-Budd or Bruce Luckhurst. You may not be able to complete a project due to time constraints but you will have the opportunity to discuss it and receive advice.
