Marquetry is the traditional craft of making pictures out of thin slices of timber veneer, or, more poetically, painting with wood. The technique was developed in the late seventeenth century in Europe and was brought to England by Huguenot craftsmen. It was, and still is, used to make highly decorative surfaces on tables, cabinets and chests.
