Bill Ratcliffe – Craven Conservation & Restoration Ltd

Craven Conservation Ltd provides a professional conservation and restoration service for furniture and decorative arts. We offer a wide range of skills including cabinetmaking, surface finishing, marquetry, wood turning, gilding, cane/rush seating, traditional upholstery and all general restoration work. We complete work for the general public and take on projects of all sizes. We also complete work for museums and historic house and support other conservators on larger projects when required. We focus on traditional craft skills combined with modern conservation standards and techniques.

Director, Bill Ratcliffe has many years of experience and is fully qualified. These qualifications include City & Guilds in cabinet making, upholstery and surface finishing though to a Masters Degree in the Conservation of Historic Objects. Work is completed from a professional well equipped secure workshop in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Ian Wall Furniture Restoration

I provide a comprehensive restoration, repair and conservation service on all types of antique and modern furniture and wooden artifacts. I aim to provide a first class service with professional and experienced advice. My well equipped workshop has easy access to the M27 from both Southampton, Winchester and Portsmouth and I am able to offer transportation of items by arrangement. I value my reputation for reliability and punctual completion. I am an Accredited Member of the prestigious British Antique Furniture Restorers’ Association having passed the stringent assessment process in April 2008 and sit on the Executive Committee. I trained at West Dean College and passed, with Distinction, their Diploma in the Conservation and Restoration of Antique Furniture before completing a further year and achieving a Post Graduate Diploma from the University of Sussex in 2003. I then worked alongside an experienced restorer before setting up my own premises in October 2011. I share the premises with my wife who is a picture framer and can undertake all types of framing and frame restoration.

Hours of business

I am at the workshop Monday to Friday from around 09.30 am until 5.30pm. I am often there late and sometimes earlier. I am also out on site work and deliveries. It is best to ring me beforehand before calling at the workshop so I can ensure I am there.

Rodrigo Titian – Titian Studio

Titian Studios has been a family run business since Rodrigo’s father started trading in 1963 and has been in Rodrigo’s care along with his wife Rosaria, who specialises in painted and decorated surfaces, lacquer and japanning, since 1986. Rodrigo was brought up with the restoration business and all through childhood he frequented the workshops. He first learnt how to gild at the age of 14 by his father and attended his apprenticeship at the age of 16 with Fernandes & Marche Gilders and Fine Furniture restorers and runs regular gilding courses at his London studio.

He has been an accredited member of the prestigious British Antique Furniture Restorers Association since 1986 and was vetted by John Kitchin MBE (then head of furniture and conservation at the V&A.). He also sits on the Executive Committee. He has co-written a book with his wife “Gilding and Lacquering” and has appeared on BBC2 for an Arts and crafts restoration programme, and also on BBC2 for a programme on the restoration of Kew Palace where he was heavily involved with the making and fine decorating of a number of pieces currently on public display.

His most recent filming was for a BBC2 programme called Restoration Roadshow, a 20 show series, which was screened in late summer of 2010 and was watched by an average audience of just short of 2 million people.

Rodrigo has many prestigious clients, ranging from Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, the Queens House Greenwich, Kew Palace, Spencer House and Historical Royal Palaces, through to the cream of antique dealers, and many Top Interior Designers. His residential client list is also very extensive along with an array of celebrity clients and he and his team are fortunate enough to look after many private collections.

His most recent projects, include the completion of the restoration/conservation of ceiling panels painted by the Architect William Burgess (in 1880) in Tower House, Holland Park, Kensington, and the restoration of the gilding of the Prince Albert Memorial statue in Kensington Gardens.
