A one day symposium at Arnolfini exploring the Bauhaus’s impact on
Bristol open to everyone who has an interest in design.
About this Event
This is a day packed full of information and discussion about Modernism in 1930s Britain. It centres on the previously untold story of the collaboration between the Bauhaus’s Marcel Breuer and Bristol furniture manufacturer Crofton Gane. Bringing the Bauhaus to Bristol established a legacy which continued post-War in the Bristol Guild of Applied Art, Bristol’s ground-breaking design shop, right down to today’s teaching methods at the University of the West of England. Speakers include the V & A’s Christopher Wilk, design historians Dr Alan Powers and Dr Oliver Kent, Isokon historians Leyla Daybelge and Magnus Englund, architect Max Gane, curator Chris Yeo and UWE interior design head, Phil O’Shaughnessy.
The symposium is one of a series of events related to the Bauhaus in Bristol exhibition at the Ken Stradling Collection. For more info: www.stradlingcollection.org
