T L Phelps Fine Furniture Restoration

Timothy Phelps

As one of the country’s leading furniture conservators I have recently worked on several important pieces in the collection of nationally significant, documented Thomas Chippendale (senior and junior) and William Trotter (Edinburgh’s leading cabinetmaker of the Regency period) pieces at Paxton House in the Scottish Borders and carried out an extensive condition survey of over 120 pieces in their collection.

I continue to repair, maintain, and adjust the historic locks and cabinets in the John Rylands Library, Manchester (a Grade 1 listed building) and am restoring Victorian oak furniture and panelling at the Mayor’s Parlour, Rochdale Town Hall.

I work with great care, knowledge, skill, and integrity on items that range from top museum pieces, through modest provincial work, to modern and well-loved family items. I have a wonderful stock of fine old-surface antique timbers.

I am also an ICON accredited conservator-restorer (ACR), an accreditation assessor and am listed on the Conservation Register; I am a member of the Chippendale Society Executive Committee.

Recently relocated to Herefordshire, I regularly travel to the north-west and north-east of England, continuing services to clients where I worked for nearly 40 years. Areas covered include Herefordshire, West Midlands, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire.

I am experienced in handling all aspects of insurance work, including water, fire, smoke and transit damage.  I offer skilled appraisal of historic pieces, providing condition reports, treatment proposals and estimates.

Private and insurance enquiries also welcome.
